Popular Red Wine Grape Varieties

Red wines are rich wines that are made from a wide variety of red grapes that are grown all over the world. Depending on the soil terrain where the grapes are producing, the aroma of the grapes will result in a wine taste that can also vary widely, but all very tasty and the same. Here are some of the grape varieties that, then and now, make some of the best red wines on the market.

Durif Grapes: 

These grapes were discovered in the 19th century by the French doctor Dr. Durif that is growing this variety. He created famous red wine combinations by mutating its race with other grapes. Durif grapes are a cross between Syrah grapes and Pelouric grapes. When these two grape varieties are blended together, they form a grape that is primarily known in the US as Petit Sirah.

Merlot: 

Merlot wine mixed with Cabernet Sauvignon to produce a smooth, fruity wine. It's dry and very rich. Merlot pairs well with rich meats and also it pairs well with heavy winter dishes. This grape variety is slightly more brittle than other grape varieties and is more likely to develop fungal problems than some of the other grape varieties.

Sangiovese: 

This grape was born in northern Italy. Used for Chianti. These grapes produce soft wines that go well with a variety of foods, such as pasta and rich Tuscan dishes. This wine is often mixed with Cabernet Sauvignon to add flavor.

Grignolino: 

This grape is mainly grown and used in the Piedmont region of Italy. He produced one of the types of wine he liked the most when he was young. This wine is best enjoyed with beef and light to medium snacks and cheese. This is a type of wine that is extremely rare outside of its native region.
